When I was in Penang, I used to love browsing at the famous Lorong Kulit Flea Market held daily at the carpark of the City Stadium.
You can find all kinds of things on sale there. From household items, furniture, antiques, knicks and knacks to even computer parts being sold!!!
We used to joke that if you ever lost your shoes when left at the mosque entrance, chances are it will show up at the Lorong Kulit secondhand shoes section!
'Thieves Market' is the title they give to the flea market there.
Another infamous one is the one at Rope Walk, just off Carnarvon Street.
That is really the haunt of the diehard drug addicts who will surprise you with their zeal and extreme measures plus hard work in stealing even wrought iron gates or any heavy duty stuff such as engines, motor parts or whatever they can hack, prise out or push and pull to the street to sell for a few bucks to satisfy their drug dependency!
One can find all kinds of things at the Rope Walk, too. Sometimes you would come across things you'd never imagine made available like an old record with your favourite song single on it, an old gramophone like the one you saw in one of P.Ramlee's black and white movies, parangs, keris'es, and other artifacts.
If you are visiting Penang, make sure you check out the Lorong Kulit and Rope Walk flea markets. You never know what you will find there ! Happy browsing!
